Frequently Asked Questions
Is anesthesia safe?
- Anesthesia can be relatively safe for healthy individuals, but can have higher risks for others. This is why it's very important to be transparent about your child's medical history.
Why can't my child eat or drink before anesthesia?
- During anesthesia, pressure from the oxygen that helps your child breathe can push anything in the stomach back up and into the lungs.
- The throat is also asleep during anesthesia to stop the food and drink from entering the lungs.
- This means ANY food or drink (even small) can enter the lungs. Stomach acid will then start to melt the lungs, which can lead to serious infections, brain death, or death.
How long will the procedure be?
- The duration of the procedure is dependent on the dentist and the procedure. It is best to inquire your dentist about the length of the procedure.
